New Weight-Loss Pill Approved for Use in UK
Foundayo, a daily weight-loss pill made by Eli Lilly, has been approved for use in the UK, offering a new option for treating obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Foundayo, a daily weight-loss pill made by Eli Lilly, has been approved for use in the UK. This marks the first country in Europe to approve the medication, which is designed to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Foundayo is a form of GLP-1 medication that works by blunting appetite. It is the latest addition to a growing list of weight-loss treatments available in the UK. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved Foundayo for use, but it does not automatically mean it will be made available on the NHS.
Eli Lilly has stated that while Foundayo can be used by the NHS for type 2 diabetes, the company will be making an application to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in England for it to be recommended as a weight loss treatment as well.
Experts have welcomed the approval of Foundayo, citing its potential benefits. Dr. Simon Cork from Anglia Ruskin University noted that while the weight-loss benefits of Foundayo may be less than other treatments, patients can still expect to see "significant, clinically meaningful changes to their weight". He also highlighted the potential cost savings of Foundayo compared to other weight-loss treatments.
University of Glasgow expert Prof. Naveed Sattar agreed that the approval of Foundayo is "good news". He emphasized the convenience of Foundayo, which can be taken at any time of the day, unlike the Wegovy pill which has to be taken on an empty stomach.
A key advantage of Foundayo is its potential to help people coming off weight-loss jabs remain slim. Trials have shown that patients who had used weight loss jabs and then been given the tablet, also called orforglipron, every day for a year avoided regaining much of the weight they had lost.
As with any medication, there can be side effects to using Foundayo, including nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting. People on weight loss medication are also advised to eat a healthy diet and get enough exercise.
