A single weekly workout of brisk walking intervals can reduce belly fat as effectively as exercising three times per week. This finding from the University of Hong Kong challenges standard exercise advice and provides a practical option for time-pressed individuals.

Researchers at the School of Public Health at the LKS Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed) conducted the study. They focused on belly fat, also known as central obesity, due to its links to metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and higher early mortality risk.

Study Design and Participant Groups

Overweight adults with central obesity, 315 in total, were tested in randomized trials lasting four months. Participants were divided into three distinct groups.

GroupExercise Protocol
Once-weekly groupOne 75-minute interval session per week
Thrice-weekly groupThree interval sessions per week, totalling 75 minutes
Control groupNo prescribed interval training

The interval training involved brisk walking. This method alternates short bursts of faster, vigorous pace with periods of rest or slower walking to lower the heart rate.

Key Results on Fat Reduction and Fitness

After four months, both exercise groups showed significant and similar improvements compared to the control group. Reductions in total body fat mass, body fat percentage, and waist circumference were comparable between the once-weekly and thrice-weekly participants.

Cardiorespiratory fitness also improved in both active groups. The thrice-weekly group saw an 11 percent improvement, while the once-weekly group showed an 8 percent gain.

Professor Parco Siu Ming-fai, head of the division of kinesiology at HKUMed, explained the implications. 'Our findings show that once-weekly interval training offers similar benefits [to three-times-a-week training] and represents a practical exercise strategy,' he said. He noted that time constraints are a major barrier for many adults, making a single weekly session a feasible alternative.

Practical Application for Time-Constrained Individuals

The research offers a new perspective for those struggling to fit regular exercise into a busy schedule. For people new to running or following programmes like Couch to 5K, one longer interval session each week could replace multiple shorter ones.

The principle can extend to running intervals themselves. A single, longer high-quality interval session might provide similar fitness gains as two or three shorter sessions for those pressed for time.

However, the source report clarifies that three longer interval sessions weekly would still yield better results. The once-weekly option is presented as an effective compromise, not a superior method. It is a strategy for sustainable practice when frequent workouts are not possible. The study provides a science-backed option for managing weight and health within the constraints of modern life.
