Wahoo has launched a new Apple Watch application aimed at runners. The company positions this app as the beginning of a journey rather than a final destination, and it use Wahoo's existing hardware expertise, notably its KICKR RUN treadmill.

This release is more than a simple watch app; it represents Wahoo's broader platform strategy. Users are not required to record runs with the Apple Watch app to access the platform, as activities can be imported from other devices like Garmin watches or phone apps.

The Apple Watch App Experience

The Wahoo Apple Watch app is bundled with the Wahoo Fitness app and typically installs automatically on a paired watch. The app focuses primarily on data recording rather than replicating a full smartwatch experience. It offers several sport profiles for selection.

These include Treadmill Running, Running, Biking Indoor, Mountain Biking, Road Cycling, Gravel Biking, Walking, Gym (Strength), and Other. The app allows pairing with external sensors such as heart rate monitors, the KICKR RUN treadmill, cycling power meters, and cycling speed and cadence sensors.

Once in the Running mode, the interface follows Apple's design language. A settings panel lets users manage a countdown, auto-pause, auto-lap, and any specific training plan. A key feature is the customizable data pages. Users can toggle field titles and use the Apple Watch's Digital Crown to adjust the number of data fields displayed per page, up to a maximum of seven. This feature, called "Perfect View Zoom," mimics the functionality on Wahoo's ELEMNT bike computers.

There are roughly seven pre-configured data pages, including a map page without routing. Wahoo provides an extensive library of data fields to choose from, a feature the source says "really shines over Apple’s default implementation." The app can also display planned structured workouts from Wahoo's SYSTM training platform. Recording a run populates the configured data fields, and the watch displays summary statistics upon completion.

The Wahoo Training Platform and Subscriptions

Wahoo's broader strategy involves guiding users toward a paid subscription. The ecosystem consists of two main apps and one legacy app. The free Wahoo App manages devices and displays completed activities, though Apple Watch settings cannot be configured within it. The Wahoo SYSTM App is the paid training platform, evolving from acquired content like The Sufferfest. The older Wahoo ELEMNT app manages legacy bike computers.

The Wahoo App itself has three subscription tiers.

TierMonthly PriceKey Features
Free$0Workout tracking and future recovery features
Wahoo COREUS$4.99 / £4.99 / €4.99Adds training load related features
Wahoo PROUS$17.99 / £14.99 / €17.99Adds personalized recommendations, a full workout library, and advanced planning tools

After a workout, the Wahoo App presents a detailed data analysis interface for free, excluding the dimensional training load metrics. The source describes the organization as "data-rich" and "easy to understand."

Limitations in Training Load and Planning

A feature called 'Dimensional Training Load' (DTL) is presented within the app, showing holistic training load over time. However, this analysis requires the CORE subscription and has significant limitations. According to the source, DTL values are only calculated for Running, Cycling, and Walking activities. For other sport types like strength or yoga, only the raw workout duration is considered, without factoring in heart rate intensity.

The source tested this, noting, "a 25-minute moderate-intensity rowing or strength effort is treated exactly the same as 25 minutes of a relaxing yoga session." This approach heavily skews the training load calculations. Also, Wahoo does not incorporate user-perceived effort ratings to adjust DTL values.

Another noted gap is the lack of dedicated running training plans within the SYSTM platform. While there are approximately 133 standalone running workouts, there are no plans for goals like marathon training. A triathlon plan is available, but it includes swimming and biking. The source calls this "a pretty big omission" for a company that sells a high-end running treadmill. The app also does not currently provide daily workout recommendations using its existing library of individual workouts.

Wahoo's move into the Apple Watch ecosystem centers on data recording and a subscription-based training platform, though its advanced analytics currently show gaps in how they handle diverse workout types and structured running guidance.
