Apple Watch Series 12 launches with enhanced health tracking
The Apple Watch Series 12 introduces a new heart rate sensor, overnight HRV trending, and a Readiness Score for personalized daily guidance.

The Apple Watch Series 12 launches with significant upgrades to heart rate and HRV tracking for more accurate, continuous wellness insights. Its new optical heart rate sensor features an increased electrode surface area for better ECGs and a new LED array below for improved 24-hour readings. The watch now takes background heart rate readings every five seconds, which is sixty times more frequent than before. It also adds overnight HRV trending and recording within the Vitals app as a key metric, expanding its capabilities to measure heart rate and HRV more frequently. An author said, "Claim of Apple Watch Series 12/Ultra 4 'Most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable'."
Apple claims its new ML-powered pedometer delivers the most accurate step tracking in any smartwatch. The Series 12 is available in three case materials with several color options, and the ceramic models are marginally thicker.
Readiness Score offers personalized daily guidance
A new Readiness Score synthesizes sleep, vitals, training load, and activity to help users gauge their daily physical state. The score is based on a range of zero to ten, with zero being the worst and ten being the highest. It has four core descriptors: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, and Go For It.
Users can view the Readiness Score on the watch or in the Fitness app. It leverages sleep data, vitals metrics, training load, and recent activity data. The Apple Watch Series 12 Readiness Score requires seven nights of initial data for HRV trends before it can populate scores.
Health app redesign brings AI-powered insights
The updated Health app adds AI-driven recommendations, a Health Age metric, longevity tracking, and lab integration. This redesigned app is in beta and will roll out later this year. Its Insights are powered by Apple Intelligence and include features like suggesting intervals.
A new Health Age metric is calculated based on sleep, VO2Max, HRV, heart rate, exercise minutes, steps, and optional lab data. The app adds a new longevity tab based on nutrition, metabolic health, overall movement, sleep, hearing, heart metrics, and mental wellbeing. It also adds support for pulling in lab work, with an optional Quest Diagnostics lab panel covering over 50 biomarkers for a fee.
New tests are introduced, including a VO2Max test that can be done in a living room in six minutes. Tests for flexibility, movement mechanics, and strength can also be trended. Many of these Health app Insights offer features without needing an Apple Watch, though most insights do require one.
Audio Intelligence adds on-device sound awareness
New on-device audio features provide real-time alerts and instant song recognition, with privacy-first processing. The Apple Watch Series 12 includes a new secure audio processing enclave for Audio Intelligence, doing everything on-device without needing a phone for immediate processing.
Available today are Sound Recognition alerts for sirens, doorbells, baby crying, and more, which show up as text on the watch. Also available now is Instant Shazam, which instantly shows the name of songs when you raise your wrist.
Coming later in 2026 are Live Rewind, where a double-tap of the Digital Crown provides a text-only transcription of the last 15 seconds of spoken words, and Siri Recap, which will summarize conversations heard around you into a recap available on your phone. Users can configure all Audio Intelligence features independently, enabling or disabling them with further focus-mode-like controls for Siri Recap.
The Apple Watch Series 12 requires an iPhone 11 or newer running iOS27 for initial setup and configuration. The Apple Watch Series 12 Readiness Score requires seven nights of initial HRV data before it can populate scores.
