A 56-year-old IT systems integration manager from the Wirral has slashed four minutes off his 10K personal best through structured track training and data analysis. His time dropped from 48 minutes to 43:58 at the Oulton Park 10k, where he placed 19th overall and won his age group, motivated by his wife’s running journey and his daughter’s athletic involvement.

His running journey began with a 5K completed in about 28 minutes. That first effort gave him an appetite for more despite the struggle. He found competing against himself addictive. Football was his passion for years, where he played left wing and could sprint, but he had no initial interest in distance running. Seeing the positive change in his family's wellbeing was encouraging. When his wife got a running watch, he began poring over her data. His 14-year-old daughter later inspired him to join Wirral Athletic Club. Running on the track felt faster and more conditioning than the roads, and interval sessions there helped him get quicker.

Training and motivation

He uses his Garmin Fenix 7 Pro watch to feed race data into AI, which analyses course elevations and compares past performances to offer pacing advice. He declared this his 'year of speed', inspired by a Runner’s World 'speed' issue, aiming to beat personal bests set five years ago when he started. So far he has broken his 1K, one-mile, 5K and 10K targets, with the half marathon next. He also pays close attention to his gear, using different shoes for daily runs, tempo sessions, and supershoes for races.

Music is his second biggest hobby, but he does not listen to it while running. He prefers audiobooks of music biographies, having enjoyed books about Fleetwood Mac, Dexys Midnight Runners, and Debbie Harry. He reads Runner’s World cover to end for kit reviews, nutrition guides, and recipes like smoothies. "I slashed 4 minutes off my 10K PB by using this one session," he said, referring to his track interval work.

Community and progression

He loves the competitive aspect of Strava segments and leaderboards on local routes, particularly short-run leaderboards. His favourite routes are around where he grew up on the Wirral, passing woods and streets where he played as a child and old friends' houses, revisiting memories. His parkrun age-grading score is now 71%, which parkrun categorises as a 'regional' standard.

After beating his half marathon personal best, he plans to make next year his 'year of adventure'. He aims to run abroad, visiting many different courses, and fancies off-road runs with good views.
