Heated outdoor pools across the UK are expanding access to winter swimming with new facilities and seasonal heating initiatives. From Brighton to the Scottish coast, lidos are offering warmed water, coaching, and wellness amenities to support year-round practice.

Sea Lanes in Brighton offers a 50-metre, six-lane beachfront pool with year-round heating to at least 19C and coaching for all levels, positioned as a stepping stone to open-water swimming. Located on Madeira Drive, the National Open Water Swimming Centre opened in June 2023 on the site of the former Peter Pan playground. Swimmers can train in the consistently heated pool, which has a uniform depth of 1.275 metres. Diving and bombing are prohibited across all six lanes. Coaching sessions run for all abilities, from novices to triathletes. Olympic silver medallist Keri-anne Payne endorsed the concept at the launch, stating, 'The ideal scenario is that they swim here and get more confident before taking it out into the sea.' The complex includes eateries Fika and Wood x Coal, plus the Bison Beer bar. Public swim sessions cost £11.90 for adults and require advance online booking.

Historic lidos adapt with seasonal heating for winter use

Beccles Lido in Suffolk will heat its pools to 28C this winter for the first time. The initial heating period runs until 3 January, with a potential extension to the end of March depending on popularity. The facility, which began as a riverside bathing place in 1894 and became a three-pool lido in 2009, features a 30-metre main pool with a springboard and slide, plus toddler and splash pools. A wood-fired sauna and cafe complement the offering. The timetable will include lane swimming, family fun swims, and aquacise classes. Adult entry starts from £7.40.

Renewable energy and modern upgrades sustain community pools

Hathersage Swimming Pool in Derbyshire, celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, now uses a modern renewable heating system after replacing its original coke boiler. The 30-metre outdoor pool maintains a temperature of 27C. It is open daily year-round with reduced hours from November to March. The pool, given to the village by local philanthropist George Lawrence, who was killed in the Sheffield blitz, offers hot poolside showers and a sauna from October. It also hosts regular night swims with live music and has a cafe. Adult entry is £8.

Modernised lidos combine heritage with year-round wellness offerings

Thames Lido in Reading, reopened in 2017 after a three-year restoration, provides a 25-metre pool heated to 20-24C year-round. The historic site, originally opened in 1902, also features a hot tub, sauna, steam room, and a cold-water drench bucket. Massages are available for booking. A high-end poolside restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Access to the pool and thermal facilities starts from £25 for a two-hour session.

Eco-conscious upgrades define next-generation lido experiences

Chesham Moor in Buckinghamshire is a 25-metre spring-fed lido upgraded in 2023. It uses a Nasa-designed ionisation unit to reduce chlorine levels and features solar panels. The pool is heated to 27C year-round, though it may be cooler in very cold weather. It is open daily for lane and general swimming, aqua fitness, and swim masterclasses. The site also offers outdoor circuit classes, tennis courts, a riverside walk, and a cafe. Adult entry starts from £7.

Portavadie in Scotland features what is believed to be the biggest heated outdoor infinity pool in Scotland, powered by a woodchip biomass generator. Its extensive marina resort also includes an outdoor spa, sauna, and a leisure centre. Beccles Lido's initial heated period runs until 3 January, with potential extension to end of March depending on popularity.
